In reading about this study from the University of Michigan, I am profoundly affected by a fact that should be obvious to the point of dull. Of course animals can tell each other apart. I’m having one of those nights where I’m baffled by how well humans can perceive some things, give certain details such over-attention to the point of anxiety obsessions over them, and others are completely imperceptible.
Wasps can read the faces of other wasps.

“Write down my dreams as often as I can remember them — even if they’re just vague impressions or images” is one of my 2012 resolutions. I hadn’t written anything before last night. It’s really much more difficult to put dreams down in writing than I thought it would be based on how often weird dream memories pop in to my head or how frequent some of my recurring dreams have been. But last night I had difficulty sleeping, and woke up and wrote this:
Tonight all my dreams were wide + flat landscapes where something was happening in that general direction + I know what it was vaguely but couldn’t find it
Not a bad start (?). If I’m having weird dreams and thinking about them so much I might as well write about/out of them.

Number 1 Priority: design a city where nobody needs or wants or even thinks about cars, then somehow unhear the sound of one hitting a person trying to cross the street outside your window.
(One of Louis Kahn’s conceptual plans of Philadelphia that would intercept all cars into the swirling spirals (garages) while leaving the interior for pedestrians)

The situation between them was one which could have been cleared up only by a sudden explosion of feeling, and their whole training and habit of mind were against the chances of such an explosion.
